Frequently Asked Questions

I am under 18 years of age. Can I attend academeic classes and/or take the HiSET?

  • To attend classes in Adult Education, you must be 18 years old and not enrolled in High School. 
  • You may if you are homeschooled.
  • You may if you have not been enrolled in a high school or any state approved private school for at least one full year.  Written approval from the superintendent or designee of your school district is required.
  • You may if there are extenuating circumstances (documented, immediate need) that are acceptable to Adult Education and the school district in which you reside.  Written approval from the superintendent or designee of your school district is required.

If you have met any of the criteria listed above, you may be enrolled in an adult high school diploma program.

If you have met any of the criteria listed above, you must be 17 years of age to be eligible for the HiSET, High School Equivalency Diploma, exam in the state of Maine.
