In January 2014, Maine changed its approved high school equivalency test from the GED to the HiSET.
HiSET provides adults with the opportunity to obtain a high school equivalency certification with the same legal standing as a high school diploma. Through a pre-testing, preparation, and testing program, it allows test-takers to demonstrate proficiency of the academic skills and knowledge expected by employers and post-secondary institutions. HiSET™ consists of five subtests:
Language Arts-Reading
Language Arts-Writing
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
While each person enters the process with varying academic skills, the steps are the same: CASAS math and reading assessments to help focus the right development of skills by classwork/studying/tutoring, pass all five pre-tests, and finally pass the five Official HiSET exams.
